What a customer gets out of it

  • Give customers a cost-effective VM hosting platform to test against their current hypervisor renewal
  • Walk a real migration off VMware using the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization
  • Run, snapshot, recover and back up the migrated VMs: the day-to-day, not just the first boot
  • Show the upgrade path: the same platform runs containers when the customer is ready, without a second migration

Why it matters

Virtualization renewals have pushed a large number of organisations into evaluating alternatives, and most of those alternatives are a lateral move: a different hypervisor, the same architecture, a lower invoice. OpenShift Virtualization Engine is a different proposition. It is priced to compete for VM hosting, but the platform underneath is Kubernetes — so the same infrastructure that runs the VM estate today runs containers when the business is ready, without a second migration and without a second operations team. For a customer who knows they are heading toward modern applications but cannot get there in one step, that makes the VM decision and the platform decision the same decision. The migration tooling being part of the platform rather than a separate purchase is what makes it testable rather than theoretical.

Overview

Your alternative to VMware for hosting VMs. Each booking builds a source VMware vSphere environment and a Red Hat OpenShift cluster with OpenShift Virtualization and the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization: the configuration sold as OpenShift Virtualization Engine (OVE).

You migrate VMware workloads onto OpenShift, then run, snapshot, recover and back them up. Underneath it is Kubernetes, so the platform that hosts the VM estate today runs containers when the business is ready, without a second migration.

Topics this class covers

  • OpenShift Virtualization basics: running and managing VMs on OpenShift
  • VMware cold migration with the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization
  • VMware warm (hot) migration (coming soon)
  • Cloud-native golden image creation for VMs
  • VM snapshot and recovery
  • VM backup with OADP

The advanced lab, OpenShift Virtualization: VMware Migration & BCDR, starts with the same migration and adds a second OpenShift cluster: ODF clustering and data replication across two sites, and complete VM disaster recovery workflows with failover and failback.
