OpenShift Virtualization — VMware Migration & BCDR
The advanced lab: migrate VMware workloads onto OpenShift Virtualization, then replicate, cluster and recover them across two OpenShift sites with ODF disaster recovery and OADP backup. Builds a source vSphere environment and TWO OpenShift clusters.
Not available to book
This demo is under maintenance and cannot be booked. It will reopen once its owner marks it ready.
What a customer gets out of it
- Show a live VMware-to-OpenShift Virtualization migration rather than describing one
- Prove replication and failover between two OpenShift clusters, not a single-cluster demo
- Let a class do the migration themselves with their own accounts across all three environments
Why it matters
Migration off vSphere is the single most common conversation in the estate right now, and the objection is always the same: what happens to business continuity. This demo answers both in one sitting — move the workload, then fail it over.

Overview
Our advanced migration and business-continuity class, spanning three environments in a single booking: a source VMware vSphere cluster and two OpenShift Virtualization clusters with OpenShift Data Foundation, acting as migration target and DR peer.
It starts where the VM Hosting Alternative to VMware lab does, migrating VMware workloads onto OpenShift, then goes further: data replication, ODF clustering and VM BCDR workflows between the two sites.
Part 1: the same start as the VMware Alternative
- OpenShift Virtualization basics
- VMware cold migration with the Migration Toolkit for Virtualization
- VMware warm (hot) migration (coming soon)
- Cloud-native golden image creation, VM snapshot and recovery, and VM backup with OADP
Part 2: advanced, replication and BCDR
- VM live migration and storage migration
- ODF overview: OpenShift Data Foundation storage for VMs
- ODF clustering and data replication across the two OpenShift sites
- VM disaster recovery with ODF: the failover and failback workflow
Why it is different from the other demos
Every other demo in the catalogue builds one environment in one landing zone. This one builds three, co-scheduled, sharing a single roster of instructor and student accounts.
